Mechanical Fitter

Location: Bristol
Contract Type: 18 months
Hours: 40 hours per week
Working Pattern: Monday to Friday, 07:00am 15:30pm
Salary: £27.34 Umbrella per hour (Inside IR35)

About the Role

We are currently recruiting for a Mechanical Fitters to join a busy Heavy Maintenance team in Bristol. This role is responsible for carrying out the stripping down and rebuilding rail vehicles, as well as carry out overhaul, and repairs in line with company procedures, engineering standards, and safety requirements.

The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring rolling stock reliability and availability targets are achieved, while supporting continuous improvements in safety, quality, and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • As a Mechanical Fitter you will carry out maintenance and overhaul activities on rail vehicles
  • Complete work as allocated by the Team Leader or Heavy Maintenance Manager
  • Operate and move rail vehicles within depot operating limits where authorized
  • Adhere to all safety procedures, VMIs, local instructions, and relevant operational documentation
  • Ensure worksheets and maintenance documentation are completed accurately and signed off promptly
  • Follow all quality, environmental, and engineering procedures at all times
  • Maintain high housekeeping and cleanliness standards across the depot
  • Use PPE in accordance with company standards and local instructions
  • Assist in achieving rolling stock availability and reliability targets

Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 3 in Engineering (Rail Traction & Rolling Stock preferred)

Essential

  • Previous experience within rail vehicle heavy maintenance environments or coach building environment carrying out strip downs and rebuilds of vehicles
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical information
  • Good understanding of mechanical and electrical engineering principles
  • Must be able to start on the 23rd July 2026
