Why work for us?

Our working culture

There are many elements of our culture that we want to retain from pre-pandemic times, but we believe these are the most important:

  • Operating highly collaboratively, across departments and with a wide range of people (staff and volunteers)
  • Using social and informal contact when physically together to create energy and excitement
  • Maximising the creativity and innovation that comes from being physically together with people

There are elements of our working practices that have evolved during the pandemic that we
want to hold on to, these include:

  • Working at pace and in an agile way
  • More focus on wellbeing and work/life balance
  • Using technology to connect, collaborate and improve efficiency where it’s fit for the
    task

Collaborative working

We've created a space for collaborative working in our office at Gilwell Park, where you can jump into think tents for a meeting or plan team days in the amphitheatre.

Diversity and inclusion

As Scouts we’re proud of lots of our work that strives to create a fairer and more equitable society. We now have over 102,000 girls and have started over 800 sections in areas of deprivation over the last decade. We believe it’s a priority to reflect the diversity of the communities we're in.

We're committed to encouraging and promoting diversity and inclusion in our workplace and services to members. This reflects our values of respect, belief, care, cooperation and integrity, where everyone should be treated with dignity at all time.

Scouts will take every possible step to tackle all forms of discrimination, inequality, and unfair treatment, whether it’s intentional or unintentional, direct or indirect. Scouts is committed to making sure that all employees have equal access to opportunities and to removing all barriers to inclusion in the workplace.

We recognise that we achieve more with a talented group of diverse individuals, who bring different experiences and perspectives that enable us to represent the full diversity of our Movement and society. We positively encourage applications from all individuals irrespective of their gender, age, home country, ethnic background, sexuality, religious beliefs or disability.

However, despite all of this we know that we’re not as diverse as we’d like to be as a workplace and we’re actively working to change that.

Investors in People

We’ve been certified by an independent assessment as being a great place to work.

We were once again awarded the prestigious Investors in People (IIP) Gold accreditation in 2022, and also received the IIP Third Sector Award in 2020.

IIP is the standard for people management, defining what it takes to lead, support and manage people effectively to achieve sustainable results.

We were particularly praised for:

  • Our positive impact on society
  • The way we live by our values
  • The fact that we’re considered a great place to work
  • Our strategic planning
  • Our collaborative ways of working
  • Our commitment to performance management
