Sheffield City Council

Working for Sheffield City Council

As one of the largest employers in Sheffield, with over 7,000 employees, we aim to recruit and develop people who share our passion for Sheffield. If you work for us, you will be part of a team, which provides a huge range of services to our 574,000 residents, businesses large and small, as well as to our many visitors to the city.

We work as one team for Sheffield to meet challenges head on and involve local people to improve our services and quality of life in our city. Our employees talk about the pride they feel in making a difference, and in return for their dedication and contribution, we offer a workplace where people feel supported and can perform at their best.

Our employee values

Our employee values are some simple, straight-talking statements, developed by the people who work here, for the people who work here. They guide how we do things – whether individually or together, whatever our role or location, supporting us to meet new challenges and make our organisation a positive and productive place to work.

Our values are:

  • people are at the heart of what we do
  • openness and honesty are important to us
  • together we get things done

We're ambitious

Our Council vision is for Sheffield to flourish as a modern city that is socially and environmentally just, with great opportunities and wellbeing for everyone.

Our priorities are to empower people and businesses to thrive, build sustainability into all areas of life and keeping Sheffield’s diverse communities at the heart of all our plans.

Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Policy sets out our equality commitments to the people of Sheffield and our staff and how we will meet them.

We are a City Council, where we are investing for the future.  This includes investment in the skills and capabilities of our workforce and attracting new talent to deliver for Sheffield and ensure our people reflect the city we serve.

We’re diverse, open and inclusive

We believe in the importance and intrinsic value of a diverse and inclusive workplace.

We celebrate difference, and encourage everyone to grow like the city we love. If you join us, our aim is that you are part of a diverse, open, inclusive organisation, where you can achieve your potential being yourself.

We like to involve you

You can get involved in our employee led networks, so that we listen to the needs of specific groups on key issues to support inclusion and drive our values around equality and diversity.

Employee benefits

If you work for us, we aim to equip and support you so that you are skilled, healthy and motivated at work, can perform well and provide an excellent service to people in Sheffield.

Your work-life balance: flexible working and annual leave

We have a wide range of flexible working options. The type of options available will vary depending on the individual job role and there will be some roles, where we can offer more flexibility than others. You are welcome to discuss options at interview.

For some roles, we’re adopting a hybrid way of working, with time at home and in the workplace, to meet the needs of our customers and for better team working. In addition, we have family friendly policies, where there could be flexibility around the hours you work. For some roles, you could work part time/job share or work term times only.

When you start with us, if you work full time, you will be entitled to 26 days holidays, rising to 31 days after five years, plus bank holidays. If you are part-time, your entitlement is a proportion of this. Depending on your role, you could also access an annual scheme to purchase additional annual leave, temporarily reduce hours or take a career break.

Wellbeing and Involvement

To support you with any emotional, financial or legal matters, you can use our employee assistance programme, which provide a free and completely confidential life management and personal support service.

In addition to working in a supportive environment, you’ll have the chance to get involved in employee events and groups to help improve our services to Sheffield people.

Financial rewards

As an employee, you can join the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS), Teachers' Pension Scheme or NHS Pension Scheme depending on your employment status. This is a valuable part of your pay and reward package.

As a member of our pension scheme, you have a flexible and tax efficient way of a decent pension to look forward to in retirement. You also get tax relief on any earnings that you pay into your pension.

It is easy to make your contribution, as we can make a regular deduction from your monthly salary. On average, our employees pay 6.5% of their salary into the pension scheme each month and the remainder is paid by us. The amount will vary, but generally we will contribute two thirds of the scheme's costs and you contribute one third.

To help reduce your travel to work costs, you can save on the cost of a new bike and/or cycling equipment through our Cycle scheme which enables you to get a tax-free bike and pay for it by monthly deductions from your salary.

Sheffield City Council has also teamed up with Westfield Health Scheme to offer you a reduced rate for private health cover. Westfield Health provide an allowance towards the cost of your dental and optical treatment, physiotherapy and other treatments.

You can also access our special offers/discounts with retailers, gyms, Vodaphone and Northern rail and other transport providers.
